 BOTOX®
is a medication used to temporarily paralyze muscle function. It stands for Botulinum
Toxoid. It was created originally to treat certain eye conditions, mainly crossed
eyes. BOTOX® was found to relieve facial spasms and neck banding when injected
at these sites.
This results in smoother and younger looking skin around
the injected areas.
We are now utilizing BOTOX® to erase wrinkles
and relax muscles in specific facial areas such as vertical forehead frown creases
and crow's-feet around the eyes. Some physicians use it to minimize neck banding.
This use will give a younger looking skin to the face and neck without surgery.
BOTOX® is injected with a very tiny needle directly into the frown
muscle or the wrinkle area. Within 3 to 5 days, the muscles will relax and the
wrinkles and frown disappear. The frustrated, tired and angry look on the face
will disappear and the patient will look younger with a smoother skin.
 It
takes few minutes to inject BOTOX® and its effects last for few months
(5-6 months the first time). The treatment has to be repeated as the wrinkles
or frown will re-appear. With repeated injection the effects might stay longer
(more than 12 months).
While allergy to any medicine is possible, it is
rare with BOTOX® . There have been no reports of permanent damage caused
by the injection of BOTOX®. Local bruise at the site of injection or slight drop
of the eyelid are usually temporary side effects in some cases. In general, the
use of BOTOX® has proved to be safe in the hands of the specialist.
The
relaxation of the muscle flattens the wrinkles.
BOTOX® is one of
the most popular cosmetic "mini-treatments" today. This procedure can be done
on a lunch break and requires no anesthesia or recovery. |
