Dr Elie Gharios about
Breast Augmentation
| By:
Dr Elie F. GHARIOS What
is an Augmentation Mammoplasty? Or
Breast Enlargement. This operation is done to enhance or enlarge
the breast. It remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgery operations. There
are two types of patient who need this operation. First, those who have never
developed breast tissue and second, those who had breast tissue before pregnancy
and lost it after they had children. This operation does not tighten the breast
or raise the nipple. If you have loose skin or the nipple is low you may need
a breast lift.
What
happens during the procedure Your operation usually takes about an hour.
You should allow two hours to recover in the surgery unit. Modern techniques
provide for tourniquet control and local anesthesia with sedation so that breast
enlargement can be performed safely on an outpatient basis. There are many
ways to perform breast enlargement. The method must be tailored to the individual
patient needs. The principal is to create a pocket under the breast tissue and
place an implant into that pocket. In some patients the surgeon places the implant
under the pectoral muscle and in others under the gland of the breast.
What
to expect post-procedure
The
first week after surgery the patient should apply an elastic bandage for support.
For a month after the bandage is removed use a soft jogging bra with no underwires.
You will need to select a size but make sure it is comfortable and fits tightly.
Six weeks after surgery you can use any kind of bra you wish. If you jog or do
aerobics you may be more comfortable wrapping the elastic bandage over your jogging
bra for extra support.
How soon does normal life resumes The
recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are back to work within a week or
two. Healing is a slow process and varies dramatically from person to person
but this graph may help you understand the process. It takes almost six weeks
for any scar to begin to soften and a full year to be complete. This depends
on your job. After any operation it is necessary to rest completely for a day
or two. During the first week you will begin to feel more like yourself. By the
end of a week you may be able to perform light duties such as using a telephone
or computer. You should not do any heavy lifting for at least a month. |
